COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY
AQUAPONICS
Aquaponics is a food production system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. The aquaponic system within Mission Confluencia is incorporated into the curriculum at various levels and allows students to be involved in it's development and maintenance. Additionally, our aquaponic system serves as a model of a successful sustainable community. SAN ANTONIO WATER SYSTEM
Mission Confluencía has partnered with SAWS to create opportunities for our students to learn about the river, and the environment through various projects and experiential learning experiences. |
SOLAR ENERGY
Mission Confluencía has partnered with CPS and the Blue Wing Solar Project on I-37 and HWY 181 to use PV solar powered panels on the top of the school as a source of energy for the school and the surrounding homes in the neighborhood. SAN ANTONIO RIVER AUTHORITY
Students at Mission Confluencia will Be Watershed Wise by utilizing resources from the SARA website in . In the middle grades, students will interact with the SARA Outreach Presenters in our Confluencia school space, at the Witte Museum and on site at the river. As they reach the age of 14, they will become well informed Watershed Warriors participants and assist with SARA employees with river volunteer events. At Confluence Park, students will regularly lend their services in maintaining the grounds, leading tours to visitors and contributing to outdoor artwork displays in addition to their ongoing sustainability efforts to improve the river ecosystem. STUDENT SERVICE-LEARNING
Students have an opportunity to engage in service activities around campus, and in the community. These opportunities serve as a way to actively engage students in personally relevant and authentic activities that will enrich their learning. Beginning at age 15, students are asked to document 120 hours of service prior to graduation as a part of their educational experience. Additionally, each day every student will spend 45 minutes engaging in on-campus service-learning activities based on their interests. For example, some students may elect to tend to the vegetable garden while others may elect to tend to the ReBicycle program. |
